That warms my heart! Thanks for sharing!

Grief is both a painful necessity and a privilege, for it comes as a result of having loved.

ETA: When I taught high school, I used to read lots of things aloud (and with the lower level classes, I read entire novels to them out loud). Even my AP students were enthralled -- they always commented that they hadn't been "read TO" in ages and ages and ages, and they loved it I remember hearing Steve talk one time and saying that research says that typically the teachers people remember the most/claim to be favorite teachers are the ones that read to them

Recently there was a news piece about a girl going off to college whose father hadn't missed a single night of reading aloud to her since she was five years old! When she was away from home, they would read short selections over the phone. It was very heart warming. I have no intention of stopping the read alouds anytime soon.

    ...Read on!

Btw, Jim Trelease of The Read-Aloud Handbook fame would be most proud. (For the uninitiated, Jim Trelease strongly advocates reading to children through high school.)

I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves.

it's funny. i never intentionally stopped reading to the boys, but when they went to school, homework and a busy activity schedule kind of edged it out. and then the read alouds became more and more directed toward my younger dd's interests.

but i know how important reading aloud to kids is. it has been the main stay of our home school! and when we take a long car trip, i have a captive audience! i took an education class on reading in college and to drive home the point the professor spent part of each class reading aloud to us! it was marvelous!

i am having so much fun with Animal Farm that i am already plotting my next read... i think it will be To Kill a Mockingbird, one of my ultimate favorites!
