questions about one year novel

I am going to purchase this for my two students to use this fall.
My 18 yr old is really excited about it also,even though she is graduated. She and her 2 friends do a writing club where they work on writing things,and get together once a week to share. She is wondering about using this in her writing club?
Is this something where they could watch the video and get enough out of the lesson? Do they need the workbooks since they aren't using this as a curriculum?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The workbooks provide them with the framework/boundaries for the lesson. If you buy the boxed set it comes with one. Would they need another? Maybe not...but yes they could watch the video and do a club.
