It feels safer to me to always be planning, because then I don't have to engage and fail.

I guarantee you that if you put the distractions of other curriculum away it will be a better year!
I understand the need for planning, I have had the same experience. This is why I always say homeschooling takes practice. If you keep practicing each day "doing" instead of "planning and thinking" of homeschooling it does get better.
Thankful for God's mercies as well!
