    Talking Rowing Beyond this year

Hey there! It's been a while since I've been on the boards but was going through some curric on my shelf the other day and saw some wonderful beyond books! Then I realized that I haven't done most of them with my youngest ds (12). So, we are off to rowing again! I know he will enjoy them. I was thinking about rowing Hitty, but decided to start with a couple of the beyond titles first and I will purchase AB maybe in Jan. I still haven't decided which one to start with. When my oldest ds (17) was rowing beyond my youngest rowed with us but on a smaller scale, so I may just do one of those to keep him geared up and warmed up again!

Anyway, I have always found wonderful support in the FIAR boards and the Lamberts. What a blessing to have this wonderful resource!

Hi Lynna! Good to see you back!

I think you will love rowing these books with your 12yo. I know my 12yo is excited about our Beyond studies too. We will be doing volume 3 this year. Look forward to seeing you here.

May I ask you ladies (and any others who have children 12+ and rowing BY) what else do you include for your studies for kids that age?

How much of BY do they do on their own and how or what parts are done with you?

    Yolanda,

I will be happy to share what we are doing. Please know up front though that I'm a pretty low-key in terms of our subjects. I start some subjects later than others, but find that it has worked for us.

    Bible - Personal reading/study/Scripture memory
Family Bible study - We have been using Picture Smart Bible study and are just about finished with the Old Testament
Worldview - I'm going to be using the Lightbearers Curriculum this year.

Beyond - I'm doing this with 2 of my boys. One needs more help (the younger) and so I do a lot of things with them. I do sometimes give the older boy independent things to read and write reports on. (VERY short!)

    Math

Rainbow Science - 2 year program for 7th and 8th grade

Spelling - using Spelling Power b/c this is an easy subject for him

I'm looking at doing some sort of WWII study for him because this is what he really want to learn this year. I'm not sure yet how I'm going to piece this together, but want to do what he would like to learn about. I figure that is the beauty of homeschooling, right?

    Hope this helps.

I'll be rowing beyond with Elijah this year and he is also 12. I think he will enjoy the beyond books, but he will need more help than my oldest son did when he rowed beyond.

When my oldest son (now 20) rowed beyond I had a sick baby (Elijah) so he pretty much did it on his own with just some discussion with me. Elijah is not motivated like that so he will need a little push now and then. He needs to work on writing skills.

    My school plans for him:
Beyond - We are starting with Boxcar Children
    Teaching Textbooks
    Spellingcity
He will be going through the Apologia Botany book on his own because that is what he wants to do.

Lynna, Glad to see you back

    Yolanda,
I am doing Beyond Vol 1 for my 5th grader and adding spelling, grammar and math.

I am doing Beyond Vol 3 for my 7th grader and adding spelling, grammar, math and Apologia general science, but doing it slowly, over 2 years instead of one.

    They are both learning guitar.

    Default For Math...?

Hi everyone - glad I found this thread.

I see some use Math U See and Some using Teaching Textbooks... any insight into why you chose one over the other? (especially if you've tried both?)

    Thanks!!

We tried Math U See when my daughters were younger. It didn't work very well for my daughter because it is based on the mastery method, which means that you don't move on until they master the concept. If they are having a hard time understanding something, then you get "stuck" and she was frustrated & so were we.
We actually went from Math U See to Horizons Math, which was colorful & fun. We really did like it, but there were so many problems it was overwhelming, even when we would cross some of them out. My oldest daughter just isn't a math whiz, so we struggled still.
We finally went to Teaching Textbooks when she was old enough (and knew enough math) to place into the first level they had available at the time. It has worked the best for us, although she will never love math. She's in her fourth year of using Teaching Textbooks.
We do use Life of Fred Fractions (and soon Decimals & Percents) as a fun (sometimes) supplement, although this isn't necessary.

Praying the Lord would help us to be the change we want to see reflected in our children.
